St. Andrew By-The-Sea United Methodist Church is honored to host renowned scholar, activist, author and artist, the Rev. Dr. Peter M. Wherry, at our Hilton Head Campus on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. for an engaging discussion on Faith & Race.
What does our faith have to say about race? How do our religious and spiritual practices shape us as we live in a racially diverse society? Join Dr. Wherry as he challenges us on the intersections of faith and race, and the ways faith informs our lives together.
About Dr. Wherry:
Since January of 2007, Dr. Wherry has served as Sr. Pastor of the Mayfield Memorial Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC. In addition, through his work as founding moderator of the United Missionary Baptist Association, Dr. Wherry has provided leadership to 70 mostly Baptist churches in the Charlotte area representing a constituency of 40,000 persons.
He is a founding “foot-soldier” of the Forward Together Moral Movement which has stood for such social issues as voter rights and economic justice. Dr. Wherry has been a guest lecturer and featured preacher at several seminaries and has been an adjunct professor and doctoral advisor. He has preached coast to coast in the U.S. as well as internationally. In Virginia, Dr. Wherry served urban and rural churches, and was appointed to the State Board of Juvenile Justice and served as a counselor for the VA Department of Corrections, working with violent sex offenders.
His published works include a unique musical CD and devotional in collaboration with his wife, Dr. Wanda Wherry, entitled A Door of Hope: A Devotional with Sermons and Songs of Hope. He also partnered to produce The Forward Together Lectionary as a resource to assist preachers in the task of incorporating social justice into houses of faith. His latest book is Preaching Funerals in the Black Church: Bringing Perspective to Pain.
As an artist, Dr. Wherry has been a choir director, singer and actor in international and national touring productions of such Broadway shows as The Wiz and Ain’t Misbehavin’ and many other plays ranging from Shakespeare to more contemporary works. As a vocalist, he has appeared on recordings with opera legend Eileen Farrell among others.
The St. Andrew By-The-Sea Bridge Builders Committee is offering the Faith & Race program free to the public at the church’s Hilton Head Campus sanctuary located at 20 Pope Avenue, Hilton Head, SC 29928.
In addition to the Saturday program on Hilton Head, Dr. Wherry will be the guest preacher at St. Andrew’s Bluffton Campus on Sunday, June 23. The Bluffton Campus is located just off the Bluffton Parkway at 39 Persimmon St., #203/204.
